Media/Communication

Media/communications professionals work on projects ranging from news broadcasts to online marketing promotions to political campaigns. Communications may target local, national or global audiences, and the different types of media include websites, social networks, radio, newspapers, TV, videos and email campaigns. Studies in media and communications may vary, depending on your interests. Journalism classes could include writing, editing, public speaking or even producing news for broadcasts and publishing. Communications also involve marketing and advertising, with possible courses in accounting, business, finance or audience research. Related classes include political science, psychology, sociology, photography and video making, or Web design and development. Media/communications careers include journalism, advertising, marketing and more. For example, in public relations, you can help an organization maintain a positive public image. Publicists create attention or "buzz" for companies, products and even celebrities. In promotions, you build public interest in special offers from merchants and businesses. Public Relation

Public relations (PR) specialists work to build a positive image for their employer or clients through print, online and visual media. PR often entails writing press releases and speeches or developing content for websites, blogs and social media such as Facebook and Twitter. PR professionals may also serve as media contacts or spokespeople on radio, TV or in newspapers. Studies in public relations usually include classes in market research or advertising to help students determine target audiences and find effective ways to reach them. To become a clear, persuasive communicator, consider additional courses in public speaking, copywriting or journalism. Public relations specialists often work for corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies and other employers. Examples of PR jobs include speech writer, communications specialist, media liaison, fund-raiser and director of public relations.

Multimedia Communications

Multimedia communications campaigns reach out to their audiences with a blend of different approaches, like music and video. Multimedia, also called rich content, may integrate text, audio, images and interactive features. Multimedia communications has a vast scope, for example, it may refer to online journalism, advertising, marketing, promotions or even social networking. Multimedia communications courses cover a wide range of topics, from creative writing to graphic design to advanced digital photography. Technological basics include computer-aided design (CAD) programs, video editing tools and graphics imaging applications. You may also explore Web development, for example, the programming and scripting languages used in publishing content on the Internet. Multimedia specialists work in industries like e-commerce, advertising, marketing, technology and entertainment. Careers include photojournalist, social media specialist and Web designer, depending on your qualifications. Web developers may create visual effects for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Multimedia communications projects often involve working both individually and with teams to meet clients' needs.

Journalism

Journalism involves the discovery and reporting of news and important events at the world, national and local level. The profession includes reporters for media ranging from the Web to newspapers, as well as other staff working on research, editing and production. Traditionally, journalists uncovered the news and shared the facts and their analysis with the public. With digital communications, people can now post their own instant commentary on current events as online blogs or tweets. Journalism studies focus on communications, for example, writing, editing, public speaking, photography and video or film making. Classes in government, international relations, political science or public policy may also apply. Journalism courses may cover production techniques and technology for broadcasting or publishing. Careers for journalists include reporters, correspondents and news analysts working for newspapers, magazines, websites, TV and radio. Reporters and correspondents do research on topics and conduct interviews, while photojournalists create a visual record of events to complement news stories. Journalists may specialize in an area such as sports or international politics, or they may choose a specific type of writing, such as editorials and opinion pieces.

Film/TV/Radio Production

Film/TV/radio production plays an important role in entertainment, journalism, professional sports, communications and marketing. Production specialists work with the technology and equipment needed to broadcast news programs or make motion pictures. Film producers and directors may work with videos, documentaries, short films, cartoons or feature films. Training for film, TV and radio production includes courses in camera operation, lighting, sound engineering and video editing. Students learn about the electrical equipment used for broadcasts and recordings. Classes may be available in journalism, multimedia and communications programs. Film production classes could include computer graphics, visual effects, animation, cinematography and more. Careers in film, TV and radio production include wide-ranging options such as producers, broadcast technicians, sound engineers and camera operators. These specialists may edit film or other media, or they may synchronize soundtracks with images. Multimedia producers may also work with corporate public relations and marketing; digital communications allow businesses to promote their products across the globe through online videos and social media.
