Supply Chain/Operations Management

Supply chain/operations managers make sure an organization runs smoothly, overseeing the people, processes and technology required for day-to-day business. The responsibilities of operations managers vary, from purchasing to planning the most effective use of company resources. Supply chain specialists focus on the product life cycle, including procuring materials, inventory management, warehousing and delivery. The supply chain often integrates suppliers, manufacturers, retail merchants and consumers, both domestic and international. Studies in supply chain and operations management typically build on business subjects like accounting and budgeting. Logistics courses examine aspects of product distribution, such as handling, packaging, transportation and storage. Supply chain courses may expose you to specialized software that is used to plan and track shipments. You may also consider classes relating to a specific focus, such as retail, engineering or military procurement. Supply chain and operations managers work in many different industries, from finance to industrial engineering and production. Operations managers coordinate broad-ranging business activities, for example, personnel administration, scheduling the use of materials and monitoring project status. Logisticians also work with supply chain planning; they analyze the flow of goods and propose strategies to help a company improve its efficiency.

Retail Management

Retail managers supervise store staff and oversee many activities, including in-store visual displays, merchandising, pricing, competitive analysis, budgeting, purchasing and accounting. Products in the marketplace range from furniture to appliances to clothing and jewelry. Managers work with buyers and advertisers and may even be involved in selecting new store sites and designing and planning sales outlets. Retail management studies span a variety of business subjects, with fundamentals like accounting and finance. You may also find courses in leadership, management, marketing, human resources, organizational communications, risk management, customer service and strategic planning. Related coursework includes supply chain logistics and the economics of supply and demand. Retail managers may focus on an aspect of store management, such as budgeting, accounting and financial reporting. Some managers concentrate on human resources, exploring techniques for hiring, training and keeping employees. For smaller shops, managers may be involved in all aspects of the business, including supply chain operations such as purchasing, deliveries and returns.

Marketing & Advertising

Marketers and advertisers specialize in promoting a company's products and services to the public. These professionals use different media and messages to reach the right audience and the right time. Channels of communication include the Internet, social media, radio, television, shop windows, roadside billboards and more. Marketing and advertising campaigns blend creativity with business needs. Marketing and advertising studies may cover market research, sales, pricing, product development and public relations. Classes could explore case study analysis as well as business strategy and tactics. Related subjects include communications, copywriting and content development. Careers in marketing and advertising include account coordinators, sales agents, brand managers, market researchers and promotions managers, among many others. They work in a variety of environments such as ad agencies and the marketing departments of corporations.

International Business

International business includes all the fundamentals of commerce and economics with the addition of a global perspective. Professionals in this field may work in multinational corporations or in businesses operating in only a few countries. When small companies decide to begin exporting, they may consult with specialists to manage the complex legal, financial and even socio-political aspects of international business. International business programs expand the traditional business curriculum, with subjects like cross-cultural communication, import-export trade regulations, foreign languages and possibly studies abroad. Business basics may include accounting, business law, economics, finance, human resources, organizational behavior, marketing and sales. Depending on your focus, you may also study customer service and customer relationship management, online advertising and digital promotions, e-commerce, market research, operations management, statistics, or logistics and supply chain management. International business careers include positions found in other types of companies, from sales representatives to administrative assistants to information technology managers. Professionals involved with global trade often have skills in foreign languages or multicultural experience, in addition to a business background.

Human Resources/Corporate Training

Human resources/corporate training careers focus on employee relations and developing staff talents and knowledge to increase worker satisfaction as well as company productivity and profits. Human resources professionals work with hiring and interviewing new employees, payroll, benefits and conflict resolution, and in some companies, training programs. Human resource specialists handle personnel matters across a range of industries, companies and agencies. Studies in human resources explore business administration fundamentals such as accounting, economics, finance, organizational behavior and so on. Human resources training covers specific topics like health insurance, occupational safety and health regulations and business law. Classes may include psychology, sociology and cross-cultural communication. Corporate training studies could introduce you to educational psychology and technology, including applications for online training, multimedia and presentations. Human resources and corporate trainers work in many different types of companies and organizations, from government agencies to startup enterprises. Human resources managers oversee numerous specialists in the HR departments in large corporations, whereas a small company may have one person dedicated to employee relations. Corporate training positions may require some additional education and experience; for example, trainers may teach employees how to use software programs or specialized equipment.

Finance Management

The field of finance covers investments and financial planning activities for governments, corporations and individuals. Financial specialists may examine banking transactions, develop budgets or advise clients on how to manage their money. Finance involves business strategies, including risk analysis and forecasting the expected returns on investments. Studies in finance often include accounting, economics, business administration and management as well as financial analysis methods and software. Related subjects include statistics and tax law. Those interested in budget analysis for public organizations may explore additional classes like government or political science. The principles of financial planning and analysis apply in several different careers, for example, auditor, budget analyst and management consultant. Personal financial advisors give advice to independent investors on asset allocation, taxes and insurance. Sales agents in financial services work in the securities and commodities markets, making stock trades for clients. Financial managers oversee investments for organizations and report on company goals and progress. A background in finance could also provide skills useful in other occupations in business and commerce.

Business Admin/Leadership

Business admin/leadership skills apply in wide-ranging settings such as industry, government and nonprofit organizations. Professionals in business administration may manage staff or resources, including finances and technological infrastructure. Business leaders may be corporate managers, office administrators or independent entrepreneurs. Studies in business administration and leadership cover subjects like accounting, business law, economics, finance, human resources, management psychology, marketing and organizational behavior. You may choose a particular field, such as e-commerce, health care services, international trade or management information systems. If you hope to start your own business, you may look at courses like budgeting, forecasting and market research. Business administration and leadership positions appear in many industries and organizations; for example, administrative services managers often work in government and academia, while management analysts tend to serve as consultants. Possible careers include community manager, corporate recruiter, product manager, sales manager and human resources specialist. Business leaders may also take charge of their own companies, building the marketing plan, branding strategy and customer base for a start up enterprise.
